I made several things, both for myself and for other people during my stay in Brobdingnag (за время своего пребывания в Бробдингнаге я смастерил несколько предметов для себя и для других людей). My comb had so many broken teeth (в моем гребне было так много сломанных зубьев) that I made a new one (что я сделал /себе/ новый). I asked the King’s barber to give me some soap suds when he was shaving the King one day (однажды я попросил у королевского цирюльника, когда он брил короля, дать мне немного мыльной пены; barber – парикмахер /мужской/; цирюльник) and I picked forty or fifty stumps of hair out of this (и выбрал из нее сорок или пятьдесят щетинок: «обрезков волос»; stump – пень; остаток; обрубок; обрезок; обломок и т. п.). I made the back of the comb from a piece of wood (спинку гребешка я сделал из куска дерева), making holes in it with the smallest needle (проделав в ней отверстия с помощью самой маленькой иголки) I could borrow from Glumdalclitch (какую я мог взять у Глюмдалклич; to borrow – занимать, брать на время). I fitted the hairs into these holes (в отверстия я вставил волоски) and was quite pleased with the result (и был вполне доволен результатом).

 I also asked my friend the carpenter to make me some chairs in my own size, giving him a drawing I had made of an English cane chair. Then I asked one of the Queen’s ladies to save me some combings from her Majesty’s hair. From these, I was able to weave the back and seats of two small cane chairs. I made a present of them to the Queen.

 She kept them and used to show them to her visitors. They had never seen anything like them before. Sometimes she would invite me to sit on one when I was visiting her. I absolutely refused, saying that I could never bring myself to put that ignoble part of my body on the precious hairs that had once adorned her majestic head.

 I was so bold during one of these conversations as to let him know that I found it hard to accept the way he looked down on Europe and the rest of the world. I thought it a strange habit, since I had always found him a reasonable person. Reason, I told him one day, didn’t depend on the size of the body. I made it clear that I hoped I would live to do him some service, even though he thought me so small as to be ridiculous. The King’s opinion of me improved when I had said these things. He wanted to know more about my country.

 It took five visits, each one lasting several hours, to tell him all I knew of the country that is so dear to me. The King listened with great interest each time, made many notes and asked a number of questions.

 First I told him about the House of Lords and the great care taken in educating these noblemen, so that they were always ready to advise or defend their King. Some of them were holy persons with the title of Bishop, whose task it was to take care of religious matters.

For this purpose the King and his advisors sought out men (для /выполнения/ этой задачи король и его советники отыскивают мужей; to seek out) who had led good and holy lives (которые ведут добродетельную и благочестивую жизнь).  For this purpose the King and his advisors sought out men who had led good and holy lives. Then I told him about the gentlemen of the House of Commons and how they were freely chosen by the people themselves because of their outstanding ability and love of their country.

I told him about our Courts of Justice (я рассказал ему о наших судах: «судах правосудия»), our army and our navy (нашей армии и флоте). He noted down what I told him (он = его величество записал /то/, что я рассказал ему) about how carefully the wealth of the country was managed by the Treasury (о /том/ как осмотрительно = бережливо казначейство управляет богатством страны: «управляется казначейством богатство страны»). I even told him about our sports (я рассказал ему даже о наших развлечениях; sport – забава, развлечение, игра; спорт, спортивные игры) and I finished up by telling him the main events of our history (и закончил рассказом: «рассказав ему» о главных событиях нашей истории) over the last hundred years (за последнее столетие). It was arranged (было решено; to arrange – располагать в определенном порядке; устраивать, организовывать; договариваться, уславливаться) that the King would tell me what he thought (что король поделится своими мыслями: «скажет мне, что он думает») about all the information I had given him (по поводу всех /тех/ сведений, которыми я его снабдил) during our next conversation (во время нашей следующей беседы).

The next time we met (при нашей следующей встрече: «когда мы встретились следующий раз»; to meet) His Majesty took out his notes (его величество достал свои записи) and began to tell me his doubts and objections (и начал высказывать мне свои сомнения и возражения). Again, he asked a lot of questions (/и/ снова он задавал много вопросов).

 I told him about our Courts of Justice, our army and our navy. He noted down what I told him about how carefully the wealth of the country was managed by the Treasury. It was arranged that the King would tell me what he thought about all the information I had given him during our next conversation.

He wanted to know whether the wish of the King or a sum of money paid to some worthy cause played some part in a decision to appoint a new lord. He also asked whether a young priest might not pretend to hold the same views as some noble lord in the hope of being made a bishop one day.

The King of Brobdingnag found the idea behind the House of Commons very hard to grasp (королю Бробдингнага было очень трудно понять принципы, лежащие в основе палаты общин: «идею /лежащую/ за палатой общин»; to grasp – схватывать, хватать; понять, схватить /основную идею/; осознать; постичь). Didn’t I think they would try to act so as to be sure that their own money was carefully preserved? I cannot and will not repeat all the questions the King put to me on this point.

He wanted to know whether the lawyers and judges who upheld the laws of the land had any part in making these laws, whether they were rich or poor, were paid for giving their opinion and whether they could ever become members of the House of Commons.

When it came to his views on the Treasury (когда речь зашла о взглядах короля на казначейство: «когда дошло до его взглядов…»), the King thought my memory had failed me (он посчитал, что мне изменила память; to fail – подводить, не оправдать ожиданий) and that I must be mistaken (и что я, должно быть, ошибаюсь; to mistake – ошибаться; неправильно понимать; заблуждаться).  When it came to his views on the Treasury, the King thought my memory had failed me and that I must be mistaken. I had said that five or six million were collected in taxes by the Treasury every year. But when the different items I had mentioned were added together, the Treasury seemed to pay expenses that were the double of that amount. From whom did we borrow the money? And where did we find money to pay it back? He couldn’t understand why we went to war so often when it cost so much money.

His Majesty was completely amazed by what I had told him of our history over the last hundred years. It seemed to him that we were a people who fight, kill and hate more than he had thought possible and were more cruel and greedy than he could have imagined.

The next time we spoke together (во время нашей следующей беседы: «следующий раз /когда/ мы разговаривали друг с другом») His Majesty repeated his thoughts (его величество повторил = еще раз изложил свои мысли) about all I had told him (по поводу всего, что я ему рассказал).  The next time we spoke together His Majesty repeated his thoughts about all I had told him. I will never forget his words nor the way he spoke to me. He lifted me onto his hand and said, “My little friend Grildrig, you have made the most wonderful speeches about your country and it is clear that you love it very much indeed. You have spent so much of your life travelling, perhaps you have escaped many of the vices of your own people. From all the answers you have given me to my questions, I have the opinion that your people are the most horrible little insects that crawl upon the surface of this earth.”
