I would have been quite happy in Brobdingnag (я был бы вполне счастлив в Бробдингнаге) if I hadn’t had so many accidents (если бы я не имел = со мной не происходило так много /неприятных/ случайностей; accident – /несчастный/ случай; случайность) because of my tiny size (из-за моего крохотного роста).  I would have been quite happy in Brobdingnag if I hadn’t had so many accidents because of my tiny size. Several of these accidents happened in the Palace gardens.

One day, for instance, I was taking a walk on the grass when there came a sudden shower of hailstones.

Glumdalclitch and her teacher were some distance away (Глюмдалклич со своей гувернанткой находились в некотором отдалении). The hailstones knocked me to the ground (градины сбили/повалили меня на землю; to knock – стучать; ударять, бить; сбить) and I couldn’t move (и я не мог двинуться /с места/). I felt as though someone was throwing tennis balls at me with great force (я чувствовал себя /так/, как будто кто-то бросал в меня с большой силой теннисные мячи). I got so many bruises all over my body (я получил столько синяков по всему телу) that I had to stay in my bedroom box for ten days (что мне пришлось провести десять дней в своем ящике-спальне). A hailstone in that country (градина в той стране) weighs almost eighteen hundred times as much as a European one (весит почти в тысячу восемьсот раз больше, чем европейская: «восемнадцать сотен раз столько же, как…»). I know this because I have measured hailstones in both places (я знаю это, потому что измерял градины и тут и там: «в обоих местах»).

 Glumdalclitch and her teacher were some distance away. The hailstones knocked me to the ground and I couldn’t move. I felt as though someone was throwing tennis balls at me with great force. I got so many bruises all over my body that I had to stay in my bedroom box for ten days. A hailstone in that country weighs almost eighteen hundred times as much as a European one. I know this because I have measured hailstones in both places.

A more dangerous accident also happened to me in the Palace garden (в дворцовом саду со мной случилось и /другое/ более опасное приключение) when I was left by myself for a short time one day (когда однажды я был оставлен на короткое время один без присмотра: «с самим собой»). Fortunately, I hadn’t been hurt in the least (по счастливой случайности, я совершенно не пострадал: «не был ранен ни в малейшей степени»). My clothes weren’t even torn (даже моя одежда не была порвана; to tear). The Queen was never told (королеве не стали ничего рассказывать).  A more dangerous accident also happened to me in the Palace garden when I was left by myself for a short time one day. A small spaniel belonging to one of the gardeners got into the garden by chance. It picked me up in its mouth and ran to its master. Both the gardener and I got a bad fright.

Fortunately, I hadn’t been hurt in the least. My clothes weren’t even torn. But Glumdalclitch, who had been looking for me, got a terrible shock. The Queen was never told. Glumdalclitch was afraid the Queen would be angry, and I didn’t want other people to hear the story. I felt it made me look rather silly.

They liked to talk to me (они любили беседовать со мной), and I would often be placed on a table for this purpose (и с этой целью часто ставили меня на стол).

 I hated being there, sitting on the dressing table while they changed their clothes. They didn’t mind in the least stripping to the skin while I was present. It felt very strange to be treated like this, as if I were a kitten or an insect that happened to be in the same room. For me, it was very far from being a pleasant sight.  The greatest danger I was ever placed in during my stay in that country came about while I was sitting quietly in my bedroom box one day. I had my door and windows open since it was a very warm day. My box had been placed in Glumdalclitch’s room while she was off somewhere. She had locked her door, but left her window open. I became aware of a noise at her window. Something was skipping about from one side to the other. Looking out my own window, I froze with fright when I saw that it was a monkey. This monkey belonged to one of the workers in the Palace kitchen.

The animal jumped into Glumdalclitch’s room (животное заскочило в комнату Глюмдалклич) and began leaping up and down (и начало повсюду прыгать; up and down – вверх и вниз; взад и вперед; там и сям; повсюду, везде) and playing with her things (и играть с ее вещами). He put his paw in through my door (обезьяна просунула в дверь лапу). I tried to move along the wall (я попытался двигаться = двигаясь вдоль стены) and reach the far corner of my room (достичь дальнего угла моей комнаты). But he caught my coat (но обезьяна схватила меня за кафтан) and dragged me out (и вытащила наружу).

 The animal jumped into Glumdalclitch’s room and began leaping up and down and playing with her things. I saw him coming towards my box and I ran to hide in the corner. He peeped in my windows, grinning and chattering all the time. He soon caught sight of me. If only I had kept a cool head, I could have hidden under my bed. He put his paw in through my door. I tried to move along the wall and reach the far corner of my room. But he caught my coat and dragged me out.

He took me in his right paw (она взяла меня в правую лапу) and held me like a baby (и держала = стала держать как ребенка). I could hear Glumdalclitch screaming behind me (я услышал позади себя крик Глюмдальклич) as we went through the window (/в ту минуту/ когда обезьяна выбиралась со мной из окна: «мы проходили через окно»).

 He took me in his right paw and held me like a baby. I tried to struggle but he squeezed me so hard I thought it best to lie still. He stroked my face with his other paw. I think he took me for a baby monkey.

 When it was all over I had to stay in bed for two weeks. I had been badly bruised by the animal and I felt very weak. The King and Queen and many other people asked after my health every day. The Queen also came to visit me several times while I lay sick. The monkey was killed and no such animal was permitted in the palace from that time on.

When I was better, I went to see the King to thank him for looking after me so well. He asked me how it felt to be held in the monkey’s paw, whether I liked the monkey’s food and whether the fresh air on the roof had given me an appetite. What would I have done, he wanted to know, if something like that had happened to me in my own country.

 I told him that we had no monkeys in Europe except those brought there from other places, and these were so small that I could easily deal with a dozen at a time if I had been attacked that way. I didn’t want the King to doubt my courage, so I put my hand on the hilt of my sword as I spoke, telling him in a very firm voice that it would of course have been better if I had remembered to draw my sword when the monkey put his paw into my bedroom box. Had I wounded him, he might have gone away. This speech, however, only made the King laugh loudly at me and most of the courtiers joined in.

 Thinking about it afterwards, I could see that it isn’t possible for a person to be taken seriously when among people who are not his equals. I have often noticed this in England since my return. If a man tries to make himself important in any way, and he comes from an ordinary family and has little money or education, he is regarded as both silly and foolish. He becomes an object of amusement.

I had taken a run at it, but I jumped short and landed up to my knees in the middle of it. I had to make the rest of the journey sitting in my muddy, smelly clothes inside my travelling box. That story like many others went around the palace for some days. Many people got a good laugh at my expense.
