This part of my story is so painful to me (эта часть моей истории так неприятна для меня; painful – причиняющий боль, болезненный; мучительный, тягостный, неприятный) that I would not have told it at all (что я не рассказывал бы ее вовсе), if I weren’t so fond of truth (если бы я не был так привержен истине; fond – испытывающий нежные чувства /к кому-либо/; любящий /что-либо/). I had answered all the King’s questions as well as I could (я как можно лучше: «так хорошо, как мог», отвечал на все вопросы короля). I tried so hard with every answer I gave (каждым своим ответом я всячески: «так/чрезвычайно сильно» старался; hard – /наречие/ твердо, крепко; сильно, интенсивно; энергично; настойчиво, упорно) to present my country in a favourable light (представить мою страну/родину в благоприятном свете). Yet I failed (и все же мне не удалось; to fail to do smth. – не суметь, не быть в состоянии, оказаться неспособным сделать что-либо) to give the King of Brobdingnag any understanding of our ways of thinking (хотя бы отчасти объяснить королю Бробдингнага: «дать… какое-нибудь понимание» нашего образа мышления).

 This part of my story is so painful to me that I would not have told it at all, if I weren’t so fond of truth. I had answered all the King’s questions as well as I could. I tried so hard with every answer I gave to present my country in a favourable light. Yet I failed to give the King of Brobdingnag any understanding of our ways of thinking.

However, a King who is so completely cut off from the rest of the world (однако = но, конечно, король, который совершенно отрезан от остального мира) will always think in a narrow-minded way (всегда будет мыслить узко/необъективно; mind – разум; мышление; narrow mind – узколобость; узость ума/мышления). It could never happen (такого никогда не могло бы случиться) in the more educated circles of European countries (в высокообразованных кругах европейских стран). But education suffers (но образованность /очень/ страдает) when nothing is known of the ways of other countries (/в условиях/ когда ничего неизвестно об образе жизни в других странах). What happened next (/то/ что произошло дальше) serves as an example of the King’s poor education (служит примером плохой образованности короля) and proves my point (и доказывает/подтверждает мою точку зрения).

I had hoped that His Majesty would think better of me (я надеялся, что его величество будет иметь обо мне лучшее мнение: «будет думать обо мне лучше») if I told him about our methods of war (если я расскажу ему о наших методах/средствах /ведения/ войны). I decided therefore (поэтому я решил), to tell him something of the greatest importance (сообщить ему нечто, имеющее величайшую важность).

 However, a King who is so completely cut off from the rest of the world will always think in a narrow-minded way. It could never happen in the more educated circles of European countries. But education suffers when nothing is known of the ways of other countries. What happened next serves as an example of the King’s poor education and proves my point.

I had hoped that His Majesty would think better of me if I told him about our methods of war. I decided therefore, to tell him something of the greatest importance.

I told him that we have a special powder in Europe and other parts of the world (я рассказал ему, что у нас в Европе и в других частях света есть особый порошок). When the tiniest spark of fire touches a small heap of this powder (если малейшая искра коснется небольшой кучки этого порошка; fire – огонь, пламя; spark /of fire/ – искра) it catches fire (он вспыхивает) and explodes into the air (разлетается в воздухе; to explode – взрывать/ся/) as though it is as big as a mountain (/так/, как будто она = эта кучка величиной с гору), making a noise like thunder (производя /при этом/ шум, подобный грому). I also told him that a small heap of powder (я также сказал, что небольшое количество порошка) can be put into a tube of brass or iron (может быть помещено в трубу/ствол из латуни или железа), from which it can drive a ball of lead with such speed (из которой он может выбросить = выбрасывает свинцовый шар с такой скоростью; to drive – гнать; приводить в движение) that nothing can stand in its way (что ничто не может устоять на его пути). The largest of these balls can sink a ship (наиболее крупные из этих = таких шаров могут потопить корабль), destroy a town (разрушить город) or wipe out whole ranks of soldiers (или уничтожить целые ряды/шеренги солдат; to wipe out – стереть /с лица земли/; уничтожить).

 I told him that we have a special powder in Europe and other parts of the world. When the tiniest spark of fire touches a small heap of this powder it catches fire and explodes into the air as though it is as big as a mountain, making a noise like thunder. I also told him that a small heap of powder can be put into a tube of brass or iron, from which it can drive a ball of lead with such speed that nothing can stand in its way. The largest of these balls can sink a ship, destroy a town or wipe out whole ranks of soldiers.

I told the King that I knew how to make this powder (я сказал королю, что знаю, как изготовить этот порошок) and that it didn’t cost much money (и что это стоит недорого). I could also make the drawings (я также могу сделать чертежи) from which his workmen could make the tubes (по которым его мастера смогут изготовить стволы). I offered all this valuable knowledge to the King of Brobdingnag (все эти ценные знания/сведения я предложил королю Бробдингнага; value – ценность; важность; полезность) in return for the kindness he had shown me (в благодарность за доброту, какую он проявлял в отношении меня; return – возвращение; отдача, возврат; возмещение).

The King was struck with amazement and horror at the very idea (король пришел в изумление и ужас: «был поражен/охвачен изумлением и ужасом» от самой = при одной мысли /об этом/; to strike – ударять, бить; поражать; сражать). How could I stand there (как я могу стоять здесь) describing scenes of blood (описывая = и описывать сцены кровопролития; blood – кровь; кровопролитие, убийство), death and waste (смерти и опустошения), as though I were doing him a favour (как будто я оказываю ему любезность; favour – благосклонность, расположение; любезность, услуга, одолжение)! (These were his very words (это его подлинные слова).) He would prefer to lose half his kingdom (он /заявил, что/ предпочел бы потерять половину своего королевства) than be given such a secret (чем быть посвященным в тайну /этого изобретения/).

 I told the King that I knew how to make this powder and that it didn’t cost much money. I could also make the drawings from which his workmen could make the tubes. I offered all this valuable knowledge to the King of Brobdingnag in return for the kindness he had shown me.

The King was struck with amazement and horror at the very idea. How could I stand there describing scenes of blood, death and waste, as though I were doing him a favour! (These were his very words.) He would prefer to lose half his kingdom than be given such a secret.

This is the same King (/и/ это тот самый король) who is considered by his own people to be learned and wise (который считается своим народом = которого народ считает ученым и мудрым). He is admired and loved in Brobdingnag (в Бробдингнаге к нему относятся с восхищением и любовью; to admire – восхищаться, восторгаться; любоваться). Yet, as will be clear to the reader (и при этом, как должно быть ясно/понятно читателю; will здесь выражает предположение, вероятность), this same man is so shortsighted in his understanding of the world (этот же человек так близорук/непредусмотрителен в своем понимании = видении мира), he couldn’t grasp the chance I was offering him (/что/ не смог воспользоваться благоприятной возможностью, какую я ему предлагал; to grasp – схватывать, хватать; хвататься, ухватиться /за возможность, предложение/; понять; осознать).

It would have made him the master of the lives and fortunes of all his people (это сделало бы его = он стал бы властителем жизней и судеб/имущества всех своих подданных; fortune – судьба, фортуна; богатство, состояние). But his education is unfortunately so poor (но, к сожалению, его образование настолько плохое; poor – бедный; плохой; слабый; скудный) that he couldn’t see that at all (что он совершенно не смог этого понять).

 This is the same King who is considered by his own people to be learned and wise. He is admired and loved in Brobdingnag. Yet, as will be clear to the reader, this same man is so shortsighted in his understanding of the world, he couldn’t grasp the chance I was offering him.

It would have made him the master of the lives and fortunes of all his people. But his education is unfortunately so poor that he couldn’t see that at all.

If a person could make two ears of corn or two blades of grass grow (если какой-нибудь человек сможет вырастить два колоса или два стебля травы; ear /of corn/ – колос; corn – зерно, зерновые хлеба) where only one had grown before (/там/, где раньше рос только один), said the King, he would be doing his country a better service (/то/ он окажет своей стране большую: «лучшую» услугу) than that of all the politicians put together (чем все политики, взятые: «собранные» вместе; to put together – складывать; помещать вместе; собирать). The learning of these people is not very great (знания этого народа не очень велики; learning – изучение, учение; ученость, /по/знания). Their laws are also very simple (их законы также весьма просты). In fact there are so few people who break the laws of the land (в сущности, людей, нарушающих законы страны так мало), their lawyers don’t have much practice in the use of them (/что/ их юристы имеют мало практики в их применении).

 The King wasn’t impressed either on hearing of the number of books that are written in my country on the art of politics. I told him about this one day. But he was of the opinion that all these writings were a waste of time. If a person could make two ears of corn or two blades of grass grow where only one had grown before, said the King, he would be doing his country a better service than that of all the politicians put together. The learning of these people is not very great. Their laws are also very simple. In fact there are so few people who break the laws of the land, their lawyers don’t have much practice in the use of them.

They do, however, have the art of printing (искусство книгопечатания у них, однако, существует). But their libraries are not very large (но библиотеки их не очень велики). I was allowed (мне было дозволено) to borrow as many books as I wished from the King’s library (брать из королевской библиотеки столько книг, сколько я пожелаю). Although it was the largest library in the country (/и/ хотя это была самая большая библиотека в государстве), it didn’t contain more than one thousand books (она заключала в себе не более тысячи книг).

Any book I wished to read (книга, которую я желал читать) was put leaning up against the wall of the library (приставлялась к стене библиотеки; to lean /up/ – наклоняться, нагибаться; прислоняться). The Queen’s carpenter made me a set of steps, like a ladder (столяр королевы смастерил для меня лестницу, наподобие стремянки; set – комплект, набор; set of steps – ряд ступеней; лестница; ladder – лестница /приставная/; стремянка), that I could use for reading (которой я мог пользоваться = чтобы я пользовался ею для чтения). I would climb up to the top step (я я взбирался на /самую/ верхнюю ступень) and begin reading the top line (и начинал читать верхнюю строку). Then I would walk about ten steps to the right (затем я /постепенно/ проходил около десяти шагов вправо), following the line (следуя за строкой = вдоль строки).  In this way I was able to read something of the history of the country. I had begun to wonder after my conversations with the King why he kept an army at all. One soldier on a large horse (один = каждый солдат, /сидя/ на крупной лошади) stood ninety feet tall (возвышался на девяносто футов; to stand – стоять; быть определенного роста; достигать определенной высоты). I don’t know how many horses there were all together (не знаю, сколько лошадей там было всего). But when the soldiers flashed their swords (но когда солдаты взмахивали саблями; to flash – сверкать, блестеть; бросать яркий свет; показать что-либо на одно мгновение; выставлять напоказ) it looked as though ten thousand flashes of lightning (казалось, будто десять тысяч молний: «вспышек молний») were darting at the same time from every part of the sky (разом вспыхивали со всех сторон: «частей» неба; dart – дротик; вспышка /молнии/; to dart – бросить/ся/; метнуть/ся/; лететь стрелой)

 There had not been any trouble of that kind since the time of the present King’s grandfather. But an army was still kept all the same. I have never seen anything more magnificent than the sight of this army, mounted on horseback. At the word of command, they would draw their swords and hold them up. One soldier on a large horse stood ninety feet tall. I don’t know how many horses there were all together. But when the soldiers flashed their swords it looked as though ten thousand flashes of lightning were darting at the same time from every part of the sky.
