Afterwards I saw the two farmers whispering together and pointing at me, but I couldn’t hear what they were saying. The next morning Glumdalclitch told me what they had been talking about.

 I was not so unhappy about the plan as my little nurse seemed to be, as I hadn’t given up the idea of regaining my liberty. And as to the shame of it, there was nothing I could do about that. The same thing could have happened to the King of Great Britain himself if he had been so unfortunate as to be left on his own in this country.

On market-day (в базарный день), I was put into a closed box for the journey to the town (меня поместили в закрытом ящике для поездки в город).  The journey took about a half an hour and it was the most uncomfortable journey I’ve ever made. The horse rose high into the air as it trotted along. It felt like the rising and falling of a ship during a great storm at sea, except that it happened much more quickly. I was very badly shaken when we reached the town.

After a few hours, people were ready to break the doors down to see Grildrig. I was on the table for eight hours doing the same tricks time after time.

 The farmer was very pleased at the end of the day and arranged to show me again on the next market-day. I was so tired that I could hardly stand or speak. After returning to the farm it took me three days to recover my strength. This was partly because I was given very little rest.

More and more people began to turn up at the farmer’s house, asking to see me. There was room for thirty people in the largest room and the farmer asked for the amount of money that thirty people would pay, even when the show was put on for a single family.

When I had been with the family for about two months, I was told that the farmer was planning to take me to the biggest city in the land, Lorbrulgrud.

We set out on this journey of three thousand miles on August 17th, 1703 (мы отправились в это путешествие /длиною/ в три тысячи миль 17 августа 1703 года). She carried me in a box tied to her waist, and she had done everything she could to make me as comfortable as possible. I even had my bed and spare clothes with me in the box. A young farm worker rode behind us with our luggage.

Glumdalclitch had done everything she could to make things easier for me. Several times a day she said she was tired riding and wanted to rest for a while. Then she would take me out of my box so that I could walk about a little and get some fresh air.

It was October 26th when we arrived in Lorbrulgrud (когда мы приехали в Лорбрулгруд, было 26 октября). He had a border made around the edge of the table, about three feet high, to prevent me from falling off. Within a very short time I was giving ten shows a day.

 By this time I was able to speak the language quite well and understand what was said. Glumdalclitch had also taught me the letters of their alphabet and I was learning to read their language. She had even continued to teach me during our journey, carrying a small book in her pocket. (To me, of course, the book was the size of a very large and heavy atlas.) It was from this book about their religion that I learned to read.
