 Afterwards the Queen wished to know why I had behaved so coldly to the farmer. I explained to her what my life with him had been like. I also said that the farmer would almost certainly have asked a higher price for me if he had thought I would live. I added that I felt sure I would soon recover my health as a servant of a great and good Queen, who was the Darling of the World and the Delight of her Subjects. (Glumdalclitch, on our way to the Court, had taught me some of the things she had heard the Queen’s ladies say.)

 I was examined by three scholars, who discussed their views at length. I could not be an animal, it was decided, since I had no way of defending myself. I could not run very fast, climb trees very well or dig a hole in the ground with my hands. I could not be a person either. Even the Queen’s favourite dwarf, the smallest ever known in the kingdom, was nearly thirty feet high. After a long discussion, they decided that I was a quirk of nature.

It seemed to me that the King was more reasonable (мне показалось, что король был более разумен/рассудителен; reason – разум, интеллект; здравый рассудок) than any of these learned scholars (чем любой из этих ученых мужей; learned – ученый; обладающий глубокими знаниями; scholar – ученый /обычно гуманитарий/).  It seemed to me that the King was more reasonable than any of these learned scholars. So I asked if I might say a few more words to him. I told him that I came from a part of the world where there were several million people, both men and women, who were the same size as myself. The size of the animals, trees and houses in that part of the world were in proportion to the people. It was possible, therefore, for a person of my size to defend himself and to make a living in his own country.

 On hearing this, the learned scholars only smiled. It was clear to me, however, that the King was beginning to believe me. He asked the Queen to make sure that particular care was taken of me and he said he was pleased that Glumdalclitch would continue to be my nurse.

Glumdalclitch was provided with rooms at Court, a teacher and three maids. The Queen’s own carpenter was told to make a bedroom for me, exactly the way I wanted it.

Within three weeks this skilled worker (в три недели этот искусный/умелый мастер) had made a wooden box with a door (соорудил деревянный ящик с дверью), windows and furniture (окнами и мебелью) that could have been seen in a bedroom in London (какие можно увидеть в лондонской спальне).  Within three weeks this skilled worker had made a wooden box with a door, windows and furniture that could have been seen in a bedroom in London. The board that was the ceiling lifted up and down on two hinges. Glumdalclitch lifted my bed out through the roof every day to air it. She put it back each evening and locked the roof. I had two chairs, two tables and a cupboard for my things. The smallest lock in the kingdom was made for this cupboard and I kept the key to this lock myself.

The Queen also ordered clothes for me (королева приказала также сделать мне одежду), to be made from the finest of silks (из самых тонких шелковых тканей). These were not much thicker than an English blanket (эта /одежда/ была ненамного толще английского шерстяного одеяла) and I soon grew used to them (и я скоро к ней привык). When the Queen lifted a mouthful on her fork, there was as much food as twelve English farmers would eat at a meal. She would crunch the wing of a lark, bones and all, between her teeth. I found it very hard to grow used to this.

On Wednesdays, the Sabbath (по средам, дням отдохновения), the King and Queen and all the princes and princesses dined together (король, королева и все принцы с принцессами обедали вместе). On these occasions (в таких случаях), my little chair and table were placed by the King’s left hand (мой стул и стол ставили по левую руку короля). He loved to ask me questions and would listen carefully to what I could tell him about the customs, religion, laws and learning of Europe.

 I must have talked too much about my own beloved country one particular Wednesday. The King laughed heartily, lifted me up on his hand and pointed a finger at me. Turning to his Minister, who stood behind him, he laughed again. What a foolish thing was human pride, he said, that it could be imitated by such small insects as this one on his hand. These creatures, he went on, have titles, dress in fancy clothes, build houses, love and fight, just like real people!

I felt very hurt by the King’s words at the time (в то время я почувствовал себя очень уязвленным словами короля; to hurt – причинить боль; ранить; задевать, обижать).  I felt very hurt by the King’s words at the time. Later, I was able to see what had amused him. After several months, I got used to the enormous size of these people and of all their possessions.

One day the Queen held me on her hand while she was looking in a mirror. I was able to see both of us at the same time and the difference in our sizes seemed so ridiculous! I really began to imagine I had grown smaller than my usual size. I could quite see that I might laugh if I suddenly saw a number of English lords and ladies, all my size, dressed up in their finest clothes, bowing to each other and acting in a courtly manner.

However, nobody at Court annoyed me as much as the Queen’s dwarf (но никто при дворе не досаждал/докучал мне так сильно, как карлик королевы).  However, nobody at Court annoyed me as much as the Queen’s dwarf. Every time he passed me, he would draw himself up to his full height and make some silly remark about my size. He came up behind me one day at dinner while Glumdalclitch was at the far side of the room, picked me up and dropped me into a bowl of cream. The Queen got such a fright she didn’t know what to do. Glumdalclitch came running over and soon got me out of the bowl. I was put to bed, having swallowed several pints of cream. Soon afterwards the Queen gave the dwarf away to a lady of high rank, and to my great relief I never saw him again.

Once the dwarf had gone (с уходом карлика), the only creatures that annoyed me at Court (единственными существами, беспокоившими меня при дворе) were the flies and wasps (остались мухи и осы). The Queen was puzzled by this and she asked me one day whether everybody from my country was as fearful as I. These insects were as big as birds and I really hated their buzzing around my ears while I ate. They often landed on my food or flew away with it.

More than twenty wasps came into my box one day (больше двадцати ос залетели однажды в мой ящик) while I was having my breakfast (когда я завтракал: «имел завтрак»).  More than twenty wasps came into my box one day while I was having my breakfast. The humming noise was louder than bagpipes and I was terrified of being stung. I drew my sword and killed four of them, shutting my window when the rest had flown away. I drew out their stings and found that they were as sharp as needles and an inch and a half long. I kept the four stings. Much later, when I returned to England, I gave three of them to Gresham College. I kept the fourth for myself.
