Before I tell you (прежде чем рассказать вам) how I left the Kingdom of Lilliput (каким образом я оставил королевство/государство Лилипутию), I would like to tell you about a secret plot (я хотел бы рассказать о тайном заговоре) that had been made against me (который был устроен против меня).

I had never known much about life at Court (я никогда не был особенно знаком с придворной жизнью: «не знал много о…»). It had played no part in my life up to now (до сих пор она не играла в моей жизни никакой роли; part – часть; участие, роль). Of course I had heard and read about princes and ministers (конечно, я слыхал и читал о монархах и министрах), but I had never expected (но я никогда не ожидал/думал; to expect – ждать, ожидать; предполагать, думать, полагать) to find that I, myself, was part of an intrigue at Court (что я сам окажусь замешан в придворные интриги: «обнаружить, что я сам часть интриги при дворе») or that this would take place in such a far-off country (и что это произойдет в такой далекой стране), with rules that are so different from those in Europe (с обычаями, которые столь отличны от европейских; rule – правило, норма; принцип, уклад; обычай; those /мн. ч. от that/ стоит вместо rules).

 Before I tell you how I left the Kingdom of Lilliput, I would like to tell you about a secret plot that had been made against me.

I had never known much about life at Court. It had played no part in my life up to now. Of course I had heard and read about princes and ministers, but I had never expected to find that I, myself, was part of an intrigue at Court or that this would take place in such a far-off country, with rules that are so different from those in Europe.

I was preparing for my visit to the Emperor of Blefuscu (я готовился отправится с визитом к императору Блефуску) when an important person at Court came, very privately, to my house one night (когда однажды ночью, совершенно тайно, в мой дом прибыл один важный придворный).

I placed his chair on the table, as I usually did (я поставил, как обычно /это/ делал, его кресло на стол), and sat down at the table (и /сам/ сел рядом: «к столу»). As soon as we greeted each other (как только = едва мы обменялись приветствиями: «поприветствовали друг друга»; soon – скоро) I noticed that he looked very worried (я заметил, что он выглядел весьма озабоченным), and I asked him why this was so (и спросил его о причине этого: «почему это было так»). He asked me to listen patiently to something (он попросил меня терпеливо выслушать нечто) that concerned my honour and my life (что касалось моей чести и жизни).

He said that several private Council meetings about me had been held recently (он сказал, что в последнее время относительно меня было проведено несколько секретных/закрытых заседаний /государственного/ совета). His Majesty had come to a decision two days ago (/и/ два дня тому назад его величество вынес /свое/ решение).

 I was preparing for my visit to the Emperor of Blefuscu when an important person at Court came, very privately, to my house one night.

I placed his chair on the table, as I usually did, and sat down at the table. As soon as we greeted each other I noticed that he looked very worried, and I asked him why this was so. He asked me to listen patiently to something that concerned my honour and my life.

He said that several private Council meetings about me had been held recently. His Majesty had come to a decision two days ago.

He told me that Skyresh Bolgolam – the High Admiral (он = мой гость сообщил мне, что Скайреш Болголам, верховный адмирал) – had been my enemy since I arrived (со дня моего прибытия: «с тех пор, как я прибыл» стал моим врагом). His hatred had increased since my great success against Blefuscu (его ненависть усилилась после моей великой победы над Блефуску; success – успех, достижение; against – против). As Admiral of the Fleet of Lilliput (как адмирал = будучи адмиралом лилипутского флота), he hated the idea (он не был в восторге от того: «ненавидел /саму/ мысль») that one person had been able to solve the problem of the invasion (что один /единственный/ человек оказался способным решить проблему /вражеского/ вторжения). Along with Flimnap, the High Treasurer, and some other Ministers (в сообществе с Флимнапом, верховным = государственным казначеем, и несколькими другими министрами; along – параллельно, рядом, в одном направлении; along /with/ – вместе с…), he had prepared articles of impeachment against me for treason and other crimes (он подготовил акт, обвиняющий меня в государственной измене и других преступлениях: «подготовил против меня статьи/пункты обвинения в…»).

Out of gratitude for certain favours (из благодарности за определенные услуги /оказанные ему мною/; favour – расположение; благосклонность; любезность, услуга, одолжение), this person from the Court gave me information about these meetings (этот придворный = мой гость снабдил меня /подробными/ сведениями об этих заседаниях) and a copy of these articles (и копией этого акта). The articles were as follows (вот что в нем говорилось: «пункты /обвинения/ были /такими/, как изложено ниже»: to follow – следовать, идти следом):

 He told me that Skyresh Bolgolam – the High Admiral – had been my enemy since I arrived. His hatred had increased since my great success against Blefuscu. As Admiral of the Fleet of Lilliput, he hated the idea that one person had been able to solve the problem of the invasion. Along with Flimnap, the High Treasurer, and some other Ministers, he had prepared articles of impeachment against me for treason and other crimes.

Out of gratitude for certain favours, this person from the Court gave me information about these meetings and a copy of these articles. The articles were as follows:

“Articles of Impeachment against Quinbus Flestrin, the Man Mountain (Обвинительный Акт против Куинбуса Флестрина, Человека-Горы)

Article 1 (пункт/параграф 1):

This law is made in the reign of His Imperial Majesty Calin Deffar Plune (сей закон установлен в царствование его императорского величества Келина Дефара Плюне). Whoever shall urinate within the grounds of the royal palace (/что/ всякий, кто будет мочиться в ограде: «на земле/территории» королевского дворца) shall be punished for treason (должен быть подвергнут наказанию за государственную измену).  “Articles of Impeachment against Quinbus Flestrin (the Man Mountain)

Article 1:

This law is made in the reign of His Imperial Majesty Calin Deffar Plune. Whoever shall urinate within the grounds of the royal palace shall be punished for treason. Quinbus Flestrin did maliciously and treacherously break this law by urinating in order to extinguish a fire in Her Majesty’s apartment.

Article 2:

Quinbus Flestrin, having brought the fleet of Blefuscu into the royal port (приведя в императорский порт флот /империи/ Блефуску), was commanded by His Imperial Majesty (получил повеление от его императорского величества) to seize all the other ships (захватить все остальные корабли), reduce that Empire to a province (обратить эту империю в провинцию; to reduce – ослаблять, понижать, сокращать; превращать /во что-то худшее, более низкое по статусу/) and destroy all Big-Endians (и уничтожить всех тупоконечников).  Article 2:

Quinbus Flestrin, having brought the fleet of Blefuscu into the royal port, was commanded by His Imperial Majesty to seize all the other ships, reduce that Empire to a province and destroy all Big-Endians. Flestrin asked to be excused from this service, as he was unwilling to destroy the liberty and lives of innocent people. He is therefore a traitor against His Most Imperial Majesty.

Article 3:

When ambassadors arrived from the Court of Blefuscu to ask for peace (когда прибыли послы/посланники от двора Блефуску, чтобы просить мира), Flestrin, by helping, comforting and entertaining these ambassadors, acted as a traitor (действовал как изменник, оказывая сим послам помощь и поддержку и увеселяя оных; to comfort – утешать, ободрять; оказывать поддержку; to entertain – принимать, угощать /гостей/; занимать, развлекать). He knew they were servants of His Imperial Majesty’s enemy (он знал /при этом/, что они слуги врага его императорского величества), who was in open war against His Majesty (который /враг/ вел открытую войну против его величества).

 Article 3:

When ambassadors arrived from the Court of Blefuscu to ask for peace, Flestrin, by helping, comforting and entertaining these ambassadors, acted as a traitor. He knew they were servants of His Imperial Majesty’s enemy, who was in open war against His Majesty.

Article 4:

Quinbus Flestrin is now preparing to make a voyage to the Empire of Blefuscu (собирается теперь совершить путешествие в империю Блефуску). He has not received written permission to do so (он не получил письменного разрешения на это) and, if he undertakes this voyage (и, предпринимая это путешествие: «если он совершит это путешествие»), he will be acting treacherously (он будет действовать вероломно).”

 Article 4:

Quinbus Flestrin is now preparing to make a voyage to the Empire of Blefuscu. He has not received written permission to do so and, if he undertakes this voyage, he will be acting treacherously.”

There were some other articles (там были еще и другие пункты), but these are the most important ones (но эти – самые существенные). During the debates about my impeachment (во время прений по поводу /этого/ обвинения), the Treasurer and Admiral had wanted me to be put to death in a painful manner (казначей и адмирал желали = настаивали на том, чтобы я был предан мучительной смерти: «болезненным/мучительным способом»). They wanted to set fire to my house at night (они предложили поджечь ночью мой дом), then shoot me with poisoned arrows (потом обстрелять меня отравленными стрелами; poison – яд, отрава). Most of the Ministers were against me (большинство министров были /настроены/ против меня), but His Majesty wanted to treat me more kindly (но его величество желал обойтись со мною более мягко; kindly – доброжелательно; благоприятно, мягко) and to spare my life (и сохранить мою = мне жизнь; to spare – беречь, жалеть, сберегать; щадить).

 There were some other articles, but these are the most important ones. During the debates about my impeachment, the Treasurer and Admiral had wanted me to be put to death in a painful manner. They wanted to set fire to my house at night, then shoot me with poisoned arrows. Most of the Ministers were against me, but His Majesty wanted to treat me more kindly and to spare my life.

The Emperor had asked for the opinion of Reldresal, Principal Secretary for Private Affairs (император спросил мнение Релдресела, главного секретаря по тайным делам), who had always been my friend (который всегда был моим другом). Reldresal made it clear (ясно высказал мысль) that because of my good work (что по причине моей хорошей работы), and his belief (и его убеждения; belief – вера; мнение, убеждение) that an Emperor should show mercy (что император должен проявлять милосердие = …следует быть милосердным; неопределенный артикль an показывает, что речь идет об императоре вообще, а не о каком-то конкретном), he would prefer to let me live (он предпочел бы оставить меня в живых: «позволить мне жить»).

 The Emperor had asked for the opinion of Reldresal, Principal Secretary for Private Affairs, who had always been my friend. Reldresal made it clear that because of my good work, and his belief that an Emperor should show mercy, he would prefer to let me live.

The punishment he suggested was (наказание, которое он предложил, состояло в том) that both my eyes should be put out (чтобы выколоть мне оба глаза: «что должны быть выколоты…»; to put out – выставлять; выгонять; устранять; погасить). In that way, the Emperor would be seen as merciful (таким образом, император явит всем свое милосердие: «будет видеться /со стороны/ милосердным»), and the loss of my eyes would not put an end to my physical strength (а потеря глаз не нанесет ущерба моей физической силе; to put an end to smth. – положить конец чему-либо). He pointed out that my strength might still be useful to His Majesty (он указал /на то/, что моя сила еще может быть полезна его величеству). Reldresal thought it would be enough for me to see through the eyes of the Ministers (полагал, что для меня будет достаточно смотреть /на все/ глазами министров), since that is what the greatest princes do (поскольку так поступают: «это есть /то/, что делают» /даже/ величайшие монархи).

 The punishment he suggested was that both my eyes should be put out. In that way, the Emperor would be seen as merciful, and the loss of my eyes would not put an end to my physical strength. He pointed out that my strength might still be useful to His Majesty. Reldresal thought it would be enough for me to see through the eyes of the Ministers, since that is what the greatest princes do.

Many did not agree with this suggestion (многие не согласились с этим предложением). The Admiral, Bolgolam, was very angry (был очень разгневан). He wondered (он /сказал, что/ удивляется) why the Secretary would spare the life of a traitor (почему = тому, что секретарь желает сохранить жизнь изменнику). And if I was able to put out a fire in her Majesty’s apartment (и /что/ если я был способен потушить пожар в покоях ее величества), I might, at another time, drown the whole palace (в другой раз я, возможно, затоплю весь дворец).  Many did not agree with this suggestion. The Admiral, Bolgolam, was very angry. He wondered why the Secretary would spare the life of a traitor. And if I was able to put out a fire in her Majesty’s apartment, I might, at another time, drown the whole palace. I might use my strength to return the enemy’s fleet. He had good reason to think I was a Big-Endian at heart. And, since treason begins in the heart, he believed that I should be put to death.

The Treasurer was of the same opinion (казначей был того же мнения). The country could not afford to keep me any longer (/он заявил, что/ страна не может себе позволить содержать меня дольше). He believed that the idea of blinding me did not solve this problem (/и/ он считает, что идея = предложение ослепить меня не решает этой проблемы). He said that my guilt was enough (моя вина достаточна) to condemn me to death (для того, чтобы приговорить меня к смерти).  The Treasurer was of the same opinion. The country could not afford to keep me any longer. He believed that the idea of blinding me did not solve this problem. He said that my guilt was enough to condemn me to death. But His Imperial Majesty was opposed to having me executed. Since the Council thought that the loss of my eyes was too soft a punishment, I must be punished some other way.

My friend, the Secretary, had then suggested (тогда мой друг секретарь высказал мысль /о том/; to suggest – предлагать, советовать; подсказывать /мысль/) that the Treasurer, who was in charge of the Emperor’s money (что казначей, в чьем ведении находятся деньги императора; to be in charge of smth. – ведать, заведовать, руководить чем-либо; charge – заряд; загрузка; заведование, руководство; ответственность), might give me less and less food (мог бы давать = выделять мне все меньше и меньше пищи). I would grow weak (я буду слабеть: «становиться слабым»), lose my hunger (потеряю аппетит; hunger – голод; чувство голода) and die in a few months (и зачахну в несколько месяцев). My body would then be less than half my normal size (мое тело будет тогда иметь размеры меньше половины обычных для меня). After my death, five or six thousand of his Majesty’s subjects could cut my flesh from my bones (после смерти пять или шесть тысяч подданных его величества смогут срезать мясо с костей), take it away in cartloads (увезти его на повозках; cart – повозка; подвода; телега; load – груз; cartload – одна повозка; груз, помещающийся на одну повозку) and bury it far away (и закопать далеко /за городом/), leaving my skeleton as a monument (оставив скелет как памятник).

 My friend, the Secretary, had then suggested that the Treasurer, who was in charge of the Emperor’s money, might give me less and less food. I would grow weak, lose my hunger and die in a few months. My body would then be less than half my normal size. After my death, five or six thousand of his Majesty’s subjects could cut my flesh from my bones, take it away in cartloads and bury it far away, leaving my skeleton as a monument.

It was agreed (было решено; to agree – соглашаться; договариваться, решить сообща) that the idea of slowly starving me (что план постепенно заморить меня голодом; slow – медленный; постепенный) should be kept a secret (должен сохраняться в тайне), but the punishment of taking away my eyesight would be made known (а о наказании путем лишения меня зрения будет объявлено: «наказание… будет сделано известным»). In three days, the Secretary would be directed to come to my house (через три дня секретарь получит повеление явиться в мой дом; to direct – направлять; приказывать, указывать; предписывать) and read the Articles of Impeachment (и зачитать пункты обвинительного акта).

 It was agreed that the idea of slowly starving me should be kept a secret, but the punishment of taking away my eyesight would be made known. In three days, the Secretary would be directed to come to my house and read the Articles of Impeachment.

He would then tell me of the great mercy and favour of His Majesty and Council (тогда он поведает мне о великой милости и благосклонности его величества и совета) because I was only to lose my eyes (ибо я был приговорен только к ослеплению: «должен был только лишь потерять глаза»). Twenty surgeons would carry out the operation (операцию проведут двадцать хирургов; to carry out – выносить /наружу/; выполнять, осуществлять). It would be performed by putting very sharp-pointed arrows into my eyes (она будет совершена путем всаживания в глаза очень тонко заостренных стрел; to put – класть; помещать; бросать, метать; всаживать; sharp – острый; pointed – заостренный, остроконечный) while I lay on the ground (в то время, когда я буду лежать на земле).

Having told me all this (сообщив мне все это), the messenger then told me that he must return as secretly as he had come (вестник сказал, что должен возвратиться так же тайно, как прибыл /сюда/). I stayed alone, feeling puzzled and in doubt (я остался один, находясь в растерянности и сомнениях: «чувствуя себя озадаченным и в сомнениях»; to puzzle – приводить в затруднение, ставить в тупик, сбивать с толку; озадачивать).

 He would then tell me of the great mercy and favour of His Majesty and Council because I was only to lose my eyes. Twenty surgeons would carry out the operation. It would be performed by putting very sharp-pointed arrows into my eyes while I lay on the ground.

Having told me all this, the messenger then told me that he must return as secretly as he had come. I stayed alone, feeling puzzled and in doubt.

It was the custom (существовал обычай) that when punishment had been decided upon (что после того как принимается решение о наказании; to decide – решать, принимать решение), the Emperor made a speech (император произносит речь) telling of his great mercy and kindness (в которой говорится о его великом милосердии и доброте). The people were afraid of such speeches (люди боялись таких речей). They knew that the more talk there was of mercy (они знали, что чем больше /в них/ слов о милосердии; talk – разговор; лекция; нотация; пустословие), the more terrible was the punishment (тем ужаснее было наказание; the… the… – чем… тем…) and the more innocent the sufferer (и невиннее жертва; to suffer – страдать; испытывать, претерпевать).

 It was the custom that when punishment had been decided upon, the Emperor made a speech telling of his great mercy and kindness. The people were afraid of such speeches. They knew that the more talk there was of mercy, the more terrible was the punishment and the more innocent the sufferer.

I must confess that I don’t know much about these matters (должен признаться, что я не много знаю о = не особенно разбираюсь в этих = таких вещах; matter – вещество; материя; тема, вопрос, дело), but I couldn’t see any mercy or favour in the punishment planned for me (но = и я /никак/ не мог увидеть = распознать милосердия или благосклонности в наказании, предуготовленном для меня; to plan – запланировать; задумывать; затевать). Having thought about the choices open to me (поразмыслив о возможностях, открытых для меня; choice – выбор; альтернатива, возможность), I made a decision (я принял решение). In the end, this saved my eyes and also my life (в конечном счете, это = оно спасло мои глаза и также мою жизнь).

I decided to visit the Emperor of Blefuscu (я решил посетить императора Блефуску). I sent a letter to my friend, the Secretary (я послал моему другу секретарю письмо), informing him of my plan (уведомляя = в котором уведомлял его о своем намерении) to set out that morning for Blefuscu (отправиться в то же утро в Блефуску; to set out – выставлять /наружу, напоказ/; выступать /в поход/; отправляться /в путь/). After all, I had been given permission to do so (в конце концов, я ведь получил: «мне было дано» на это разрешение: «сделать так»).

 I must confess that I don’t know much about these matters, but I couldn’t see any mercy or favour in the punishment planned for me. Having thought about the choices open to me, I made a decision. In the end, this saved my eyes and also my life.

I decided to visit the Emperor of Blefuscu. I sent a letter to my friend, the Secretary, informing him of my plan to set out that morning for Blefuscu. After all, I had been given permission to do so.

Without waiting for an answer (не дожидаясь ответа), I went to the side of the island where the fleet was (я направился в /ту/ часть острова, где стоял флот). I took up the anchor of a large ship (я поднял якорь большого корабля) and placed my clothes in it (и положил в него свою одежду).  Without waiting for an answer, I went to the side of the island where the fleet was. I took up the anchor of a large ship and placed my clothes in it. Then, pulling the ship, I swam and waded to the royal port of Blefuscu. The people had been expecting me and two guides directed me to the capital city, which is of the same name.

I asked them to let His Majesty’s Secretary know of my arrival (я попросил их известить о моем прибытии секретаря его величества). In about an hour, His Majesty and the royal family came to receive me (примерно через час его величество и /вся/ императорская семья прибыли встретить меня; to receive – получать; принимать). They didn’t seem to be frightened (они не казались испуганными). I lay on the ground to kiss the Emperor’s and the Empress’s hand (я лег на землю, чтобы поцеловать руку императора и императрицы). I told him (я объявил ему = его величеству) I had come as promised (что прибыл /сюда/ согласно моему обещанию: «как обещал»), with the permission of the Emperor of Lilliput (с соизволения императора Лилипутии).  I asked them to let His Majesty’s Secretary know of my arrival. In about an hour, His Majesty and the royal family came to receive me. They didn’t seem to be frightened. I lay on the ground to kiss the Emperor’s and the Empress’s hand. I told him I had come as promised, with the permission of the Emperor of Lilliput. I offered him anything in my power, in keeping with my duty to the Emperor of Lilliput.
