When the Raspberry Pi was first launched in 2012, it was designed as a way for kids to learn how to build a program computer for relatively little money. Hobbyists and tech-minded DIY-ers quickly saw the potential of the computer, though, which has enough processing power and functionality for an array of different fun and practical home projects.

If you’re not familiar with the Raspberry Pi, it is basically a line of caseless computers which fit easily into the palm of your hand. They come in an array of different models, which offer different sizes and input/output combinations to suit any project.

The current iteration of Pi computers includes the Raspberry Pi 3, the Raspberry Pi Model A+, and the Raspberry Pi Zero. Past versions may still be equally viable options for projects, but this book will focus primarily on the newest iterations since they’re the ones people are most likely to encounter and utilize. No matter which version you get, the Pi is very reasonably priced, costing between $5 and $35. A more detailed discussion of the versions of the Pi can be found in chapter 1.

The idea of building your own custom electronics might sound intimidating, even to someone who’s crafty or enjoys building things. Keep in mind, though, that the Pi was designed for use by kids. It’s very easy to figure out how to use it, and there are many projects that don’t require any prior knowledge of coding or electronics to create. The second chapter of this book will walk you through the process of the initial set-up.

Most of the operating systems that you can find for the Pi will be Linux-based, which can for some users be the trickiest part about getting started. If you’ve never used a Linux system before, take some time to play around with your Pi’s operating system before you start making projects to get a feel for it; the most popular operating systems are explored in more detail in chapter 3.

People have used Raspberry Pi computers for all kinds of things, from arcades and weather sensors to home-made cell phones and smart home gadgets. Some projects are just for fun, while others are more practical. Whatever direction your creative energies take, the Pi is the perfect device to take your tinkering to the next level.
