1943 г. в статье Маслоу «Теория человеческой мотивации», опубликованной в Psychological Review. Маслоу назвал пять потребностей, начиная с базовых (низших) и заканчивая потребностями высшего уровня, и сделал предположение о том, что только при полном удовлетворении одной из потребностей ее место может занять новая, более высокая потребность. Физиологические потребности находятся в самом низу пирамиды, затем следуют потребности в безопасности, любви и принадлежности, уважении и наконец в самоактуализации. Я переопределил наши основные потребности следующим образом: выживание, жизнеспособность, безопасность, самовыражение и значимость. Наивысшая потребность — духовная. И, несмотря на то что она не входила в исходную модель Маслоу, его теория по-прежнему остается выдающейся и значимой, как и в момент ее появления.
