Introduction

“Hello, I am a GIS analyst from company XYZ, and my ArcGIS® Enterprise administrator has recently left the organization. I’ve been given an administrator account, but I’m unfamiliar with the different functions and responsibilities I must do to keep the deployment running. What is ArcGIS Enterprise?”

The authors of this book have answered this question countless times over their careers, whether at user conferences, over technical support calls, or teaching instructor-led courses. It’s a common scenario for the way GIS analysts manage an ArcGIS Enterprise environment. Although analysts may be familiar with the role of ArcGIS Enterprise in various workflows, the background administrative knowledge may not be readily available to them.

Getting to Know ArcGIS Enterprise was written to help new ArcGIS Enterprise administrators succeed with administrative, technical, and practical workflows. Although not exhaustive, this book is designed to serve as an effective base of understanding to help ArcGIS Enterprise administrators build their knowledge. It’s also a handy resource for seasoned administrators who want a quick reference to other parts of the software. The authoring team gauged each topic to be appropriate for most new and intermediate ArcGIS Enterprise administrators.

About the authors

Who is the team? We are three practitioners of ArcGIS Enterprise within Esri®. In assembling the book, our goal was to capture a variety of voices and perspectives. To achieve this, the coauthors came together from different backgrounds and perspectives to create this volume.

Jon Emch is a senior technical lead for Esri Technical Support. Jon, who started working with ArcGIS Enterprise as an intern in 2017, seeks to promote technical literacy at all levels within Esri. He has written several blogs on topics ranging from distributed collaborations to patching. He leads a team of technical leads that specializes in understanding and solving the most complex ArcGIS Enterprise support cases. Jon received a BA in geography from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Diana Muresan is a senior product engineer on the geodatabase software development team. In her role, Diana applies GIS to real-world workflows in guided tutorials, demos, stories with interactive maps, and blog posts to help users maximize the potential of spatial data management. Diana received a BA and MS in geomatics from Babeș-Bolyai University in Romania and an MEng in civil engineering and GIS from the University of Colorado, Denver.

Travis Ormsby is a senior product engineer on the ArcGIS Enterprise documentation team. His eclectic career has taken him from flint knapping stone tools to deploying cloud-native applications on Kubernetes. Travis, an educator by trade, helps people learn to use ArcGIS effectively through instructor-led training, web course development, blog posts, videos, and official help documentation. Travis received a BA in anthropology from Grinnell College in Iowa, an MA in teaching from the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota, and an MGIS from the University of Minnesota.

In addition to the authors, this work was reviewed by many subject matter experts from Esri, who added insights to the work and helped ensure the accuracy of the technical details.

About the book

As you read Getting to Know ArcGIS Enterprise, remember that ArcGIS Enterprise is complimentary to ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online. Many workflows and concepts in this book work in tandem with both of those products, and many more. Consider reviewing Top 20 Essential Skills for ArcGIS Online and GIS Tutorial for ArcGIS Pro 3.4 from Esri Press to supplement your knowledge.

The book is divided into four sections, each covering a logical part of using ArcGIS Enterprise:

  1. Implementing ArcGIS Enterprise: This section covers the basics of what is required for a functional ArcGIS Enterprise base deployment. These basics include understanding prerequisites, the anatomy of base deployment, installing and configuring ArcGIS Enterprise, securing ArcGIS Enterprise, and extending the base deployment.
  2. Administering ArcGIS Enterprise: This section describes how to properly administer ArcGIS Enterprise deployment. We will introduce a way for managing content, users, and groups. Additionally, this section covers how to manage content from different data sources.
  3. Using Common Workflows in ArcGIS Enterprise: This section is a primer on fundamental workflows that support a wide range of feature service usage. Some workflows covered include how to publish from a geodatabase, consuming web layers for editing and spatial analysis, and how to share your work.
  4. Maintaining and Troubleshooting in ArcGIS Enterprise: This section is a collection of topics that deal with running ArcGIS Enterprise in a safe configuration. Topics covered in this section include how to back up and restore ArcGIS Enterprise, how to find and apply patches, and how to prepare for a system upgrade.

Special font styles used

In this book, student input for a work step is designated by colored highlighted text. The computer user interface elements are styled in bold font.

Fictional user stories

Throughout this book, we’ve included several fictional user stories to articulate the lessons of each chapter. You will find some background information on each of these fictional entities. Throughout this book, we’ve included many fictional stories that illustrate the types of issues we’ve worked on with ArcGIS Enterprise users. Those issues might be more or less relevant to different types of organizations, so we’ve invented three different fictional entities that represent the broad range of organizations that use ArcGIS Enterprise. Here is a some background information on these fictional entities to keep in mind as you read their stories in this book:

We are excited for you to start this book, which was written so that you can read the chapters in any order, depending on your interest. We hope that whether you are new to ArcGIS Enterprise or a more seasoned administrator, you will find this book a useful guide in your own journey with GIS.
