Для тех, кто хочет углубиться в тему систем письма в целом, я настоятельно рекомендую работы Дж. Сэмпсона и Дж. Дефрэнкиса (Sampson 1985; DeFrancis 1989). Наиболее полные и понятные книги по дешифровке письменностей Старого Света написаны М. Поупом и Э. Робинсоном (Pope 1999; Robinson 2007); заинтересованный читатель может также обратиться к серии Британского музея «Читая прошлое».
Общие сведения о цивилизации майя изложены в 8-м издании моей книги «The Maya» (2011); см. также: Sharer and Traxler 2006; Martin and Grube 2008; Houston and Inomata 2009. История открытия майя хорошо описана Брунхаусом (Brunhouse 1971, 1973; 1975). Работы Л. Шили и Д. Фрейделя (Schele и Freidel 1990) и А. Стоун и М. Зендера (Stone and Zender 2011) содержат трактовки культуры майя, основанные на анализе искусства и надписей.
