Сидон – финикийский город. В древние времена он был столь велик и могуч, что Гомер называл сидонцами не только его жителей, но и всех живших на побережье. Золотым периодом истории Сидона были X–VI века до н. э., когда весь Древний мир узнал о Финикии. В переводе с древнегреческого «Сидон» означает «пурпур», так как именно это знаменитое красящее вещество, добывавшееся из моллюсков, обитавших на дне Средиземного моря, принесло ему богатство и славу.
