Паранормальное
Представьте меня, пожалуйста, в Оксфорде в 1970 г.: зеленая студентка, захваченная интеллектуальной атмосферой, живописные одеяния хиппи, комнаты, наполненные ароматами благовоний, бессонные ночи, утренние лекции и универсальный расширитель сознания — марихуана.
Я вступила в Общество психических исследований и сразу же влюбилась в оккультизм, медиумизм и паранормальное — идеи, так соблазнительно противоречившие физиологии и психологии, которые я изучала. Однажды ночью случилась очень странная вещь. Мы сидели с друзьями, курили, слушали музыку; я наслаждалась ощущением быстрого движения по темному туннелю к яркому свету впереди. — Где ты, Сью? — спросил он, и внезапно я вроде бы оказалась на потолке, глядя вниз.
— Астральная проекция! — подумала я. Затем я (или некое воображаемое летающее «я») пустилась лететь, пролетела по Оксфорду, над полями и лесами и дальше. Больше двух часов я проваливалась из одной странной сцены в другую, испытывала одно мистическое состояние за другим, терялась в пространстве и времени и в конце концов потеряла даже себя. Этот необычайный опыт изменил всю мою жизнь. Все в нем казалось ярче, более реальным и исполненным смысла, чем что-либо в обычной жизни, и мне очень захотелось понять свое тогдашнее состояние.
Но я поспешила и сделала из своих переживаний совершенно неверные выводы. Несложно, в общем-то, понять: я решила, что мой дух покидал тело и что этот опыт доказывает все, что угодно — жизнь после смерти, телепатию, ясновидение и еще много чего. Я решила с великолепной уверенностью, присущей только юности, стать парапсихологом и доказать всем, что наши узколобые лекторы были неправы. Я нашла для себя место, где можно было защитить степень доктора философии по этой тематике, заработала денег преподаванием и начала тестировать собственную теорию ЭСВ, основанную на свойствах памяти. И вот тут-то меня ждало потрясение: мне пришлось полностью изменить свое мнение — и веру, и все остальное.
Я проводила эксперимент за экспериментом. Я проверяла телепатию, предвидение будущего и ясновидение — результаты получались лишь случайно. Я обучала товарищей-студентов техникам визуализации и снова проверяла их — случайные попадания. Я тестировала пары близнецов — случайные попадания. Я работала в игровых группах и детских садах с маленькими детьми (видите ли, их телепатическое от природы сознание еще не сковано образованием] — случайные попадания. Я научилась гадать по картам таро и проверила результаты — случайные попадания.
Время от времени я получала значимые результаты. Какой восторг! Я реагировала на это так, как, по-моему, должен реагировать любой ученый: искала ошибки, проверяла статистические расчеты, повторяла эксперименты. Но каждый раз я либо находила ошибку, благодаря которой результат получился положительным, либо не могла повторить результат. Но, если мой энтузиазм начинал спадать или я начинала испытывать сомнения в своей первоначальной вере, каждый раз оказывалось, что есть еще возможности — каждый раз кто-нибудь говорил: «Но ты должна попробовать XXX». Прошло, вероятно, три или четыре года, прежде чем все возможные XXX исчерпались.
Я прекрасно помню момент, когда в голове у меня что-то щелкнуло (или, может быть, мне следует сказать: «Кажется, я помню…» — на тот случай, если это воспоминание ложное]. Я лежала в ванне, пытаясь в очередной раз втиснуть свои нулевые результаты в теорию паранормального, как вдруг мне впервые пришло в голову, что я, может быть, не права, а правы мои старые учителя. Может быть, паранормальных явлений вообще не существует.
Насколько я помню, мне потребовалось некоторое время, чтобы как следует усвоить эту пугающую мысль. Я продолжала проводить эксперименты и получать случайные результаты. Парапсихологи называли меня «экспериментатором, при котором пси не работает»; имелось в виду, что я не получаю паранормальных результатов, потому что недостаточно сильно верю в паранормальное. Я успела отказаться от вполне приличного места, где можно было защитить докторскую степень, и погубила свои шансы на академическую карьеру (как любил говорить мой наставник в Оксфорде]. Я охотилась за привидениями, гонялась за полтергейстом, училась на ведьму, посещала спиритические церкви и не отрываясь глядела в хрустальные шары. Но со всем этим пора было кончать.
Решение было принято, а остальное оказалось очень просто. Как многие крупные перемены в жизни, эта перемена очень пугала меня, но теперь, при взгляде назад, она кажется совсем нестрашной. Вскоре я стала «скептиком по вызову». Я появлялась во всевозможных телешоу, объясняла, как работают иллюзии, почему телепатии не существует и как объяснить околосмертные переживания через процессы, происходящие в мозгу.
Теперь у меня осталось лишь что-то вроде открытости к любым достоверным свидетельствам. Как бы крепко я ни верила в какую-то теорию (о сознании, мемах или чем угодно еще), как бы тесно ни была связана с какой-то позицией или утверждением, я знаю, что мир не перевернется, если мне придется изменить свои взгляды.
